Merida Aerospace, a Florida aerospace company, has announced it will develop perovskite solar panels for use on its Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. Low Earth Orbit satellites are typically smaller, which makes the cost of traditional GaAs solar panels a significant fraction of total cost, making replacing them with perovskites a logical step. One of the big problem for perovskites is still degradation inflicted by humidity and oxygen, neither of which are present in space – it’s easier to make them work stably on a satellite than on the earth.
