During the Airlines for Europe (A4E) summit held March 20th in Brussels, leaders from major European airlines highlighted persistent delays and the need for greater action on sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). Their concern is not totally uncalled for, as there is now a tangible risk that Europe will lag behind its global rivals, particularly the US, in scaling up SAF production. In the near future the ReFuelEU legislation will enforce targets to increase SAF usage, but it seems as though no one is questioning how regional production levels will satisfy this imposed demand, as output is currently insufficient to meet the mandates.
