According to a new EU-funded study by DNV, demand for clean ammonia as a shipping fuel is set to surge between 2030 and 2050, with blue hydrogen, derived from fossil fuels with carbon capture and storage, dominating over green hydrogen by mid-century. We agree with the first half of that statement but strongly disagree with the second half. The study forecasts a significant rise in demand for either green or blue ammonia as a maritime fuel, from 2.3 million tons per annum (MTPA) in 2030 to a staggering 245 MTPA by 2050.
