Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz has claimed that “tariffs only make everybody poorer” in a very clear rebuttal of the EU’s imminent plans to introduce import tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs). He’s not wrong, but he’s very much playing politician here in publicly defending consumers from what is going to be immediately detrimental to them first and foremost. Regardless of their severity, tariffs on Chinese EVs are inherently going to be anti-consumer as Chinese electric vehicles are far and away the cheapest on the market. Most importantly, they are the cheapest on the market without a significant sacrifice in product quality.
