Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will require tax incentives to gain traction, but how much will be necessary? One recent example is $1.5 per gallon brought in by the state of Illinois, which has incentivized United Airlines to purchase up to 1 million gallons of SAF this year for use at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), to be provided by Finnish producer Neste. Rethink can’t see this as being enough to kickstart SAF since the price disparity between Jet-A1 and SAF is much greater than this subsidy ($2-3/gallon compared to around $9/gallon), but it is enough to start moving the needle.
