Aviation needs to decarbonize and it has few options, all of which will increase the price of airplane fares. This article won’t discuss whether hydrogen, batteries or sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is the most suitable future fuel for aviation, and will instead investigate how much cryogenics can improve the efficiency of airplanes, countering some of the future fuel cost increase. SAF is three times more expensive than kerosene today and it’s facing an uphill battle to reach cost parity. Batteries require changing after a certain number of flights due to depth-of-discharge dropping over time, and green hydrogen is also several times more expensive than what’s needed in the future.
