The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has formally approved the usage of cargo ammonia as a burning fuel which will boost the fuel’s race against methanol. Ammonia carriers will now be allowed to use part of their cargo as fuel in order to cut emissions. The ammonia doesn’t have to be green in order for there to be a net emissions drop compared to bunker fuel, but this also does lay groundwork for sustainable ammonia to penetrate the sector fully.
