SK Telecom has had a tough year, driven mainly by a brutal cybersecurity breach which has led to the CEO being replaced and huge financial losses, but in a separate and no less meaningful trend, the telco is moving forward apace with its AI transformation plans. This provides an interesting study in how to remodel the telco business. But this is a painful moment for outgoing CEO, Ryu Young-sang, who was appointed in 2021 to lead the company’s overhaul and AI strategy.
