MWC was host to frenetic activity in the LEO sector. SpaceX and Starlink were front and center at MWC, Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile launched a joint venture for European operators, and Amazon LEO has signed a backhaul deal with Vodafone. In the shadow of this action, the GSMA has published a suggested regulatory framework for direct-to-device (meaning direct-to-unmodified smartphone) services, to prepare regulators for the onslaught. At the same time, MNOs are keen to bring more of the sector under their oversight. “With these new types of services in an early—but rapidly developing—stage of deployment, now is the right opportunity for regulators to proactively develop a robust and adaptive framework,” the GSMA said in its letter.
