It may seem surprising that the peak of 2G and 3G sunsets is still to come in 2025, given some operators are already refarming spectrum from 4G to 5G (see separate story). Yet the GSA has reported its expectations that 2G/3G shutdowns peak in 2025, having been delayed in many countries by the need to keep 2G and/or 3G connectivity going for IoT services such as smart metering, as well as ensuring full coverage for voice and SMS in areas lacking 4G or 5G service. Such findings are in line with the report and 2024 – 2040 roadmap for 2G, 3G and 4G sunsetting published recently by RAN Research, the analytics arm of Rethink Technology Research.
