America Movil, the Latin American telecoms giant, has been building a power base in Europe, and Poland looks to be its latest target. According to reports in Poland, the Mexico-based firm is considering a bid for Play, the smallest cellco in the eastern European country. Movil has already taken stakes in The Netherlands’ KPN and Telekom Austria as part of a strategy to take advantage of low valuations in the recession-hit eurozone. Although its home region has higher mobile growth potential than Europe, Movil’s dominant market share limits its ability to profit from that, and it also wants partnerships with players in more mature areas where new business models are being pioneered.
