Apple’s push to become self-sufficient in more and more key iPhone components has wreaked havoc on several of its suppliers, most notably Imagination Technologies, which was forced to break up and sell itself off when Apple stopped using its graphics processor cores. The impact is less disastrous for Dialog Semiconductor, but still a big change of structure. Apple is to acquire the majority of UK-based Dialog’s power management chip business for a total of $600m, including $300m for 300 Dialog engineers who are mainly focused on Apple chip development; and a $300m prepayment for Dialog products to be delivered over the next three years.
