Apple may be on the road to acquiring its own display chip platform, courtesy of troubled Japanese chipmaker Renesas. The iPhone maker, which has acquired several assets in recent years to become more self-sufficient in core technologies, is reported to be in talks to acquire the Renesas SP Drivers unit. SP Drivers is a joint venture between Renesas, Sharp and Taiwan’s Powerchip and is the world leader in drivers and controllers for small and medium LCD displays, with market share of about one-third.
