Israeli chip designer Autotalks claims to have launched the first global V2X (vehicle-to-everything) chipset which can support both the main automotive wireless connectivity standards in a single unit, by harnessing software-defined radio (SDR) technology. This has been challenging because the two protocols are based on completely different architectures. One is WiFi-like DSRC (dedicated short-range communications), based on 802.11p specs, and the other the 3GPP’s Cellular-V2X direct communications protocol, PC5. The DSRC solution has been favored in the US, Japan and much of Europe, while C-V2X is stronger in some other regions, notably China.
