The global non-profit association CIMAC, in collaboration with the Maritime Battery Forum (MBF), has released the first of three white papers focused on the environmental impact and potential of battery usage in deep-sea shipping. Although a fully battery-powered, zero-emission solution for deep-sea vessels is not yet feasible, the paper suggests that batteries could play a significant role in reducing emissions, especially when combined with alternative fuels. It is the drastic cost decline of batteries, thanks to the automotive and energy storage industries, that brings this energy source into discussion for the 2040-2050 timeline.
