The latest government to support a wholesale LTE network, in order to boost broadband penetration, is Nigeria. The country has awarded 30MHz of 2.3GHz spectrum to newcomer Bitflux, to build a network that will provide wholesale access services to a range of ISPs and other providers. The company beat established operator Globacom for the spectrum and licence, though it went to the wire in terms of handing over the hefty $23.25m fee, with local reports that it would forfeit the airwaves and lose them to its rival. Globacom, however, said the $23m reserve price was too high and it doubted whether the wholesale-only approach would fit its businessm model.
