If you heard a quote like this from an oil major, you’d probably be relieved. “The future of global energy is dominated by four trends: declining role for hydrocarbons, rapid expansion in renewables, increasing electrification, and growing use of low-carbon hydrogen.” These words can be found at the front of this week’s BP Energy Outlook 2023, but that’s where the good news ends. As you dig deeper in to the report it reveals that hydrocarbons don’t decline fast enough; renewables don’t grow fast enough and neither does electrification and the use of hydrogen is almost negligible in BP’s opinion.
