As wireless and wireline networks converge at access and core levels, the Broadband Forum (BBF) is taking an increasing interest in wireless standards looking towards 5G. It is working on common interfaces for multi-access point WiFi (see lead article) and it has also drawn up a detailed set of recommendations for a converged, fixed/mobile 5G core, which it has delivered to the 3GPP. The BBF has worked for two years on these specifications, supported by about 10 large converged operators – including AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Telstra and Vodafone – and their major suppliers.
