Cable TV operators have become major players in broadband via the DOCSIS cable modem technology that has extracted ever higher bit rates over their HFC (Hybrid Fiber Coax) infrastructure. But at the same time the shine has gone off their original core business of pay-TV services, especially in North America where they have been churning subscribers to emerging over-the-top and SVoD (subscription VoD) providers for a decade now. That trend has, to varying extents, extended to other territories including Europe, while keeping cable shut out of those markets, particularly in developing countries, where it had never made much impact in the first place.
