October 1 saw the landmark of the commercial launch of Verizon’s long-awaited 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) services, in four US markets. Called Verizon 5G Home, it was switched on in “limited areas” of Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles and Sacramento, and other markets will follow. Verizon may have been pipped to the post by TeliaSonera, when it looked set to be the first commercial LTE provider, but it has a reasonable claim to the first to 5G. A few carriers have so-called commercial 5G networks, but none has proved that it can support many users, beyond limited ‘friendly trials’, or – more importantly – devices.
