A report just out from the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) shows that regional and federal Canadian Government organizations collectively subsidized some C$23 billion in tar sands, oil and gas pipelines in the last 3 years – this amounts to $18.5 billion in US dollars. The reports are outlined in a number of Canadian, US and environmental publications, and set against the contrast of most of the world looking to ban fossil fuel subsidy – and Canada’s stated aim to phase out fossil fuel subsidies by 2025, in line with pledges from both G7 and G20 countries, and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45% from 2005 levels by 2030.
