The European Union’s digital commissioner Neelie Kroes had to compromise last year on her aim of creating a single telecoms market, complete with super-regulator. But increased unification is happening nonetheless, and may be spurred if laws are relaxed to ease M&A and accelerate consolidation, as advocated by major operators and by the GSM Association. The GSMA’s director general, Anne Bouverot, has sent an open letter to Kroes, setting out the main elements which the carrier group believes are essential to lay the groundwork for a single European telecoms market.
