India’s Reliance Jio spent 2019 ratcheting up the pressure on its main competitors, Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel, and succeeded in leapfrogging the latter to end the year in second place in terms of mobile subscribers. It is also making huge investments in fiber, content and cloud infrastructure and services, and could end 2020 not only in the mobile lead, but on the way to being the Amazon of India with a new venture in online retail (see separate item).
