China’s Aluminum Corp (Chalco) – the country’s greatest producer and consumer of aluminum – has announced that its decision to source a majority of its bauxite feedstock from Guinea has opened it up to significant supply risk from the country as it continues to suffer from strikes affecting the mining industry. 2023 saw China import 70% of its bauxite ore from the country, followed distantly by Australia at 24%, while the remaining 6% came from other countries.
