Comcast is developing a WiFi performance monitoring system called Smart Internet for its new X1 hub, which will allow customers to initiate diagnostics from the X1 menu and pinpoint devices which are disrupting the network. This is otherwise called the “bad apple” problem – and fixing it allows WiFi to perform close to its theoretical maximum. Comcast is spending a lot on wireless gateways to prevent AT&T and Verizon trumping it in WiFi, plus it doesn’t exactly have the best track record in customer service.
