Following its recent acquisition by Qorvo, Decawave has joined the FiRa Consortium (FiRa) alongside Allegion. FiRa is another alliance promoting interoperability among ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, with a specific focus on using the technology for location services – using UWB to work out precisely where things are in the world. A few weeks ago, Riot covered Qorvo’s acquisition of Decawave. This could be a warning sign that Apple may confiscate Decawave’s UWB technology and place it within the depths of its walled garden. Qorvo is a major supplier to Apple, which incorporated UWB technology into the iPhone 11, deriving about a third of its revenue from the giant.
