Rethink Energy recently published a report evaluating what is the best method of transporting and distributing hydrogen, and has since spoken with an interesting company based in Israel. Electriq is developing a novel method of shipping hydrogen in the form of a white powder that can be stored at ambient conditions in normal containers. The findings of our report point towards the use of liquid carriers like ammonia or toluene, depending on the end use of hydrogen but CEO Baruch Halpert argues that Electriq’s patented process of manufacturing this powder – potassium boro-hydrate (KBH4) – requires less energy. Same goes for the reverse process where the hydrogen is extracted from the powder when mixed with water at 50 degrees Celsius.…
