The CEOs of European communications giants, Eutelsat, Deutsche Telekom, and Telefonica were invited to discuss the topic of tech sovereignty at MWC. The conversation quickly narrowed in on over-regulation in the region. All three execs bemoaned European bureaucracy for hindering competitiveness, rather than encouraging growth. They also laid out exhaustive measures for what is needed to secure “sovereignty” for the region, where suggestions focused on messaging systems, social media platforms, AI companies, hyperscaler systems, and cybersecurity platforms. It is nearly universally accepted that regulations lag technological advancements, but Europe is unique in that its regulators are yet to strike a balance over the telecoms sector – an industry that is over 100 years old.
