Reports in Chinese media are claiming that CATL is in negotiations with General Motors (GM) to build a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) factory at a similar scale to Ford’s planned facility. The deal would be structured very similarly to the deal between Ford and CATL, with CATL licensing its LFP technologies to Ford while helping it set up its factory. GM already has partnerships in place with LG Energy Solutions and Samsung SDI for the bulk of its cell production capacity needs as it continues to pursue the development of its Ultium battery cells.
