Both the GSA and GSMA have been talking up 5G Advanced lately, never missing a chance to highlight how many operators have been evaluating, testing and deploying the technology, as part of its evangelizing campaign. Yet there is a sense both organizations have let the side down by associating 5G Advanced merely with the single 3GPP Release 18 available from mid-2024, while underplaying it as merely the hors d’oeuvre or appetizer for 6G. This line is increasingly out of step with leading telcos and also some vendors, such as Huawei, which are now projecting steady evolutionary steps rather than any further generational changes.
