Europe’s future hydrogen economy received yet another boost this week, with E.On announcing a project to convert an existing gas pipeline to support a 100% blend of green hydrogen. The Germany utility, which recently completed its asset swap with RWE, will conduct research under its ‘H2HoWi’ project in the North Rhine Westphalia state of the country in an attempt to prove that hydrogen has no influence on the properties required of pipeline infrastructure for distribution. Through its subsidiary Westnetz, the company will disconnect a medium-pressure pipeline in the town of Holzwickede and then connect it to a hydrogen storage facility to supply four commercial customers – largely for space heating purposes using hydrogen-compatible boilers provided by Remeha.
