The importance of tablets to Intel’s mobile future was highlighted in the giant’s first quarter results. Overall mobile performance continued to drain cash and weigh on the figures, but stronger than expected PC resilience, and improving tablet chip sales, helped deliver a solid Q1. Meanwhile, arch-rival ARM saw a smartphone-driven bounceback in Q1, after a disappointing end to 2013, further indicating that the ARM-based processors are untouchable in handsets. But just as Intel has to cope with the decline of the PC, ARM will have to adapt to decline in cellphone growth and profits ‘ after a far shorter period in the sun than its x86 competitor.
