This week was that annual event known as ‘iPhone week’, though it was hard for even the most dedicated Apple watchers to find excitement in the iPhone 7. Of course, the build-up to the launch still managed to overshadow the far more innovative handsets being demonstrated in Berlin at IFA, though the continuing saga of Samsung’s exploding Galaxy Note 7 sometimes threatened to upstage everybody. But there is less and less justification for all the frenzy around an Apple launch, when both IFA and IBC are seeing more interesting smartphones launched for a fraction of the price – and indeed, the frenzy has subsided since the heady days of the late 2000s.
