Plenty of news are coming out of the African hydrogen sector at the beginning of 2024 with Egypt and Morocco leading the way when it comes to subsidies and billions of dollars in investment. The Egyptian parliament has passed legislation for a green hydrogen subsidy scheme, offering project developers a substantial tax credit of up to 55% along with various non-tax incentives. Approved by the cabinet in May, the bill awaits the president’s approval. The scheme provides a tax reduction of 33-55%, VAT exemptions on project-related equipment and materials, and additional benefits like real estate tax exemptions and VAT relief on green hydrogen exports.
