There was an idea circulating at MWC 2025 that while Open RAN is being deployed at a number of brownfield sites, the multivendor dream has died. We do not agree with this analysis, contending that while multivendor Open RAN has largely failed to materialize so far, at least in established brownfield networks burdened by the legacy of traditional RAN technology from a single vendor, it will come. There is one caveat that emerging specialist Open RAN vendors of the various components, such as virtualized DUs (Distributed Units) and CUs (Centralized Units), must win enough business in the meantime at least to survive.
