A recent study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has discussed the significant public health risk associated with adopting ammonia as a marine fuel if current regulations remain unchanged. This highlights one of the many challenges that need to be addressed before the fuel transition is embarked on. Whether we’re talking about kerosene to hydrogen in aviation, or bunker fuels to ammonia for ships, regulations and best practices need to be addressed. The same way hydrogen powertrains need to be certified before being used for commercial aircraft application, ammonia-burning engines need to undergo the same level of scrutiny.
