Almost four years ago, Nokia’s FP4 network processor burst on the scene with significant fanfare, and the router chip has played an important role in expanding the company’s customer base into the hyperscaler world. Now Nokia has unveiled its successor, the FP5, which claims significant advances in security, energy efficiency and capacity. It also claims to be the industry’s first programmable routing chip with support for 800 Gbps pluggable optics. This fifth generation processor will power new families of high end Nokia routers, that will make their debut from early 2022 onwards, increasingly targeting cloud giants as well as telcos.
