As expected, UK regulator Ofcom is leading the way in Europe towards opening up some of the 700MHz spectrum band, currently used by TV broadcasters, for mobile broadband. The first ‘digital dividend’ Europe was in the 800MHz band, which was freed up by the transition of TV (and some radio) services from analogue to digital, which requires far less spectrum. This will now be followed by the release of 700MHz frequencies, though these are not expected to be available until somewhere between 2020 and 2022 in the UK.
