Subsea cables for offshore wind are proving a problem for Orsted. In its financial results last week, the offshore wind giant admitted that it has discovered transmission lines at risk of failure at up to 10 of its European wind projects. According to the statement, the issue is arising when cable production systems (CPS) move across ‘scour protection’ – a layer of rocks placed around the wind turbines’ foundations to prevent any seabed erosion. With the cables moving with water at the seabed, protection systems are facing abrasion, putting the cables at risk of failure.
