Texas Instruments has been through almost as dramatic an upheaval as its former alter ego Nokia over the past few years. It exited the merchant baseband business, partly as a result of Nokia’s decision to adopt a far more diverse supplier base, and the Finnish giant has become progressively less dependent on the custom basebands it codeveloped with TI. The changes have made TI more reliant on its apps processor and analog businesses, as well as its base station silicon, but throughout the mobile industry, its strongholds are under threat.
