We have already seen how green hydrogen can decarbonize steel manufacturing but now we are witnessing a first example of how the reduction of iron and iron ore trade are being affected as construction has commenced on Africa’s first green hydrogen-based ironworks in Namibia. Notice that we haven’t said steelworks but rather ironworks. That is a consequence of the emerging green hydrogen transportation dilemma as it turns out it will be cheaper to reduce the iron close to a green hydrogen electrolysis plant co-located with rich iron ore resources than to transport both the ore and the green hydrogen to a steel plant.
