India’s biggest telco Reliance Jio has revamped its 5G procurement strategy by manufacturing its own small cells and RUs (Radio Units) in partnership with domestic companies, moving away from Nokia and Ericsson as its suppliers. The initial aim is to save money through local procurement, as it densifies the nationwide 5G fabric already built with Nokia and Ericsson kit. The two Nordic vendors have shared the spoils so far, benefiting from India’s exclusion of Huawei from its 5G network, having been appointed on almost the same day in October 2022.
