Samsung and GlobalFoundries are getting closer as both target the same mobile chip manufacturing business, dominated by TSMC. Under the new CEOship of Sanjay Jha, formerly of Qualcomm and Motorola Mobility, GlobalFoundries is intensifying its focus on mobility, and has licensed Samsung’s new 14 nanometer FinFET process, which the Korean giant will have in production late this year. This sees the two chip foundries narrowing the gap with market leader TSMC, which will be only months ahead in going live with its own next generation process, 16nm FinFET. Another Taiwanese contract chipmaker, UMC, will also have 14nm in production this year.
