It is almost a truism that 5G is more of a revolution than the evolution of previous generational changes in cellular infrastructure, but if that is the case it must also raise unique security challenges. Many of these of course have been anticipated and addressed, but revolutions always bring new risks including some that may not have been anticipated before, so a major challenge has been how to establish a strong yet flexible security foundation capable of evolving to meet emerging threats, without hindering the new use cases.
