South Korea is known for wanting to trial hydrogen in absolutely every application, from full city integration to different modes of transportation. The latest development comes from the city of Daejon which has signed a $210 million contract with Hyundai Rotem to acquire 34 hydrogen-powered trams. Rethink Energy doesn’t believe this is a suitable application for hydrogen and thus the development won’t get far. Trams fall somewhere between buses and trains, and Rethink concluded that both will go down the battery-electric route in our latest report. In spite of multiple hydrogen trials initiated for both buses and trains, mostly coming from Europe, neither will stay put on this side of the battery-hydrogen spectrum.
