Square is mothballing its Wallet app and card reader system, which launched in 2011 but never turned a profit. This raises more question marks over the level of demand for digital wallets, which have been heavily pushed by operators and web players, and which few brands may succeed in luring consumers. Existing users will still be able to make and receive payments with the service, but it will not be available to new customers through the iOS or Android app stores any more.
