Yet another operator-driven forum has emerged to try to drive open specifications for multivendor interoperable 5G networks. The goal is an important one, but there is a significant risk that the industry will trade the disadvantages of a closed, proprietary market for the equally serious challenges of fragmentation and confusion. The latest arrival is the 5G Future Forum, which is focusing on the intersection between 5G and edge computing, and aims to accelerate global uptake by setting common specs.
