French research institute LETI has demonstrated 5G New Radio running on a multicore DSP (digital signal processor) from start-up VSORA. This is the first implementation of a 3GPP Release 15 physical layer on VSORA’s platform, showing the potential for a multicore DSP to support the complexity and response time requirements of 5G NR, while also providing a flexible software-defined development flow. That makes it easier for engineers to try out different versions of their algorithms, and evaluate trade-offs, long before physical implementation, and to share the same source code. In both cases, the DSP environment can accelerate the time to decide on the best architecture. The approach can also fulfil the requirements of future 3GPP releases, without redesigning the whole…
