M&A, IP, Patents Indonesian operators, XL Axiata and Smartfren, have agreed to merge and form an entity called XLSmart. The new telco will be worth IDR 104 trillion ($6.53 billion) with 94.5 million customers, but is still awaiting regulatory approval. Parent companies Axiata Group and Sinar Mas have been in discussions for months – each of those two will hold a 34.8% share and the rest will be publicly listed. Voice communications technology provider Metaswitch has been bought by Alianza from Microsoft for an unknown sum. This is part of Microsoft’s winding down of its Azure for Operators offering.
