A few weeks ago we described how the unmatched fuel diversity of the maritime shipping sector will confuse and stall, rather than progress, decarbonization in this sector. Now various companies and organizations are dipping their toes in the biofuels pond – a rather shallow one – mostly to greenwash about some percentage points saved on emissions regarding specific journeys. The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) has concluded a series of biofuel supply chain trials, initiated in July 2022, aimed at establishing a framework for quality, quantity, and greenhouse gas (GHG) abatement assurances for drop-in fuels.
